Going green with Aylesbury High School!
Last week we visited Aylesbury High School to deliver an interactive presentation with our caretakers to show the students how they can make animal habitats from recycled materials.
Our partnership with the local school was established with the help of Buckinghamshire Skills Hub, who work to pair employers with schools in the area to provide young people with support and inspiration for their futures.
Julie Porter, Executive Director of Development at Fairhive, stands as our ‘Enterprise Adviser’. This position encourages business professionals to volunteer in the community with young people in order to build strong relationships with those who will make up the future of our workforces. Julie works to support Aylesbury High School with their careers plan and to encourage the young people. Julie added, “Every time I visit the school I’m so impressed with the enthusiasm and engagement levels shown by the students, and this was no exception. It’s reassuring that young people show so much concern about our environment and its future“
The school runs an Earth Club as part of the UK school's sustainability network and gets involved with various subjects, including recycling, energy use and gardening. At the beginning of this year, they were announced Eco Schools England, Secondary School of the Year and do incredible work to uphold their title.
It was great to see such keen and passionate pupils getting involved in concepts with our caretakers and all the fabulous ideas for habitats come to life. We had ‘Bugingham Palace’, ideas for dry and moist habitats and thoughts about how the students can reuse the egg cases from their canteen for warm spaces for wildlife.
Our caretakers’ demonstration bird box and bug hotels were donated to Aylesbury High School to promote habitat growth in their outside garden in the spring.
