What happens if I can't pay?
If you cannot pay your rent for any reason it is important that you contact us straight away so that we can help you. Please do not ignore any letters or telephone calls about your rent.
We understand that your financial circumstances can change, often with very little notice. However, it is extremely important that you keep your rent advisor updated.
Please remember that if any Housing Benefit has not been paid to cover your rent, it is your responsibility to liaise with Housing Benefit and cover the shortfall. If you are in receipt of Universal Credit, the housing element to cover your rent is paid to you, and you will need to make a payment to us. The easiest way is to set up a standing order or direct debit.
If you are struggling, we have a Welfare Team who can offer practical assistance in making any claim for benefits, accessing support and maximising your income.
Alternatively, call the National Debtline on 0808 808 4000 (web chat is available on their website) or your local Citizen’s Advice Bureau, who will be able to give you independent financial advice.
Eviction is our very last resort, but we also have an obligation to those residents who do pay their rent on time to make sure that we collect arrears due.
