Sustainability Survey Outcomes

We recently conducted a survey to understand your thoughts on improving our neighbourhoods, particularly in terms of green spaces and sustainability. We are grateful for the extensive feedback received and this will help us as we shape future initiatives.

There were a number of key areas that our residents who completed the survey earlier this year were particularly interested in hearing more about. Read on in this article for a short update on each area and links for more information!

Thinking about environmental sustainability in everything we do

Over 97% of respondents said that environmental sustainability was ‘very’ or ‘somewhat’ important. Of all sustainability-related matters, energy bills were seen as the most important. We recognise how much sustainability and energy affordability matters to people living in our homes and this informs our strategies around energy efficiency initiatives and securing funding to expand our Warm Homes Improvements Project. You can find out more about this ongoing programme which includes a number of energy efficiency improvements on our dedicated webpage. Sustainability statistic to show over 97% of respondents say that environment sustainability was 'very' or 'somewhat' important.

Over half of respondents expressed an interest in learning more about small energy efficiency measures. We are working closely with partners to offer home visits and practical support including quick-fit measures. Find out more about these services by visiting the LEAP and Energy Doctor websites.

Green Spaces and Maintenance

Many residents highlighted the need for more regular and thorough maintenance of our green spaces. We recognise the importance of keeping our communal green spaces as well-maintained and as accessible as possible and are actively working with our grounds maintenance contractors, to improve these services. For more details about our estate services please visit our grounds maintenance webpage. You can also see when the grass is going to be cut in your area through our contractor portal.

We also heard from those concerned about fly-tipping, which can seriously impact our shared spaces. If you encounter any incidents of fly-tipping, please report them through the Fix My Street site, we work closely with local councils for fly-tipping on any shared land or land we own.

Residents expressed a desire for more trees, shrubs, and wildflower areas to boost biodiversity. We will continue to explore opportunities to enhance our green spaces with diverse plant life that supports local wildlife. Additionally, suggestions for more seating areas and improved accessibility are being considered to make these spaces more welcoming for everyone.

Community and Environmental Initiatives

There was significant interest in creating community gardens and improving recreational spaces, both of which can help foster community spirit. We value these suggestions and will explore potential projects that align with our sustainability goals. Ideas such as installing seating made from recycled materials and enhancing green spaces will be prioritised as part of our broader efforts to support community well-being and environmental responsibility.

Safety concerns in our parks and green spaces were also raised, particularly regarding antisocial behaviour, including drug use. We are coordinating with relevant departments to address these issues and ensure that our green spaces remain safe and enjoyable for all residents.

Electric Vehicle (EV) Infrastructure

While the need for more electric vehicle charging points was raised, the survey revealed that interest in electric vehicles is currently low, with around 2% of residents already owning an EV and 20% potentially considering one in the long term. For those interested, our alterations policy is available for residents who wish to install an EV charging point. This is something we will continue to monitor and assess over the medium to long term to ensure we can meet future demand as it evolves within our communities.

We are working with developers when building properties for social rent, affordable rent and Shared Ownership to install EV chargers in new homes.

What happens next?

Through the survey, some residents have raised requests such as improved water quality checks, enhanced community engagement, and better communication from local authorities. We are taking these suggestions into account as we continue to refine our services and communication strategies.

Moving forward, we have taken all of your suggestions on board and are in ongoing discussions with various departments and local organisations to address the points raised. For those of you who expressed interest in becoming a Sustainability Champion, we will be reaching out with more details on how you can get involved in our efforts to create a greener, more sustainable community.

Thank you once again for your valuable feedback. Together, we can create a more sustainable future for our communities. We will keep our Environment strategy page updated with progress on these initiatives, so please keep an eye on our website for the latest developments.
